When the disaster happened, the dock ambulance brigade were called out and telephone messages for assistance were sent to the Newport General Hospital and to the police stations. A few men were rescued and taken to hospital. One man was taken out dead soon after the accident. He was a young crane driver and the crane had fallen upon him and killed him instantly.

Friday Evening 10pm

A man was pinned by the leg and timbermen had to saw away the timber to release him. By 10 o'clock - about five hours after the disaster struck - some men and boys who were still trapped in the trench were heard calling for help and the rescue corps passed in food and stimulants.

Saturday 3 July

The Waters come in

Rescue operations continued throughout the night into Saturday 3 July, but by noon there was very little hope of anyone buried still being alive.

By the afternoon the tidal water began to seep over the excavated ground and eventually enter the collapsed trench. The teams managed to recover 5 bodies and rescue 15 men, alive but injured, one of these later died from his injuries.
