Newport Docks Disaster 1909

Act 1 Scene 1

Alexandra Dock, Newport, Monmouthshire. A trench under construction for the new dock extension has just collapsed trapping 50 men beneath it.

It is 5.40 on a July afternoon in 1909. Sunlight.

Massive sound of cracking of wood, men shouting.

Silence for a while...........

The stage fills with smoke. Men calling out, moaning.

Men are lying on the ground - they call out in great distress. They are covered in dust, their clothes are bloody and ripped...........
