Newport Docks Disaster 1909

The Memorial reads - To the Soldiers of Industry

who fell July 2nd 1909

Soldiers of Industry who fought so well

Against the powers of earth and sea and sky

Beaten at last - crushed, shattered- where you fell

Deep-buried in a mighty grave you lie.

O valiant soldiers, where your Captains led

There you advanced, grimly your foes to meet.

The shore’s salt oose, the clay’s alluvial bed,

The tide, the sand. But now you taste defeat.

Yours the defensive warfare of the spade.

Yours to set back the limits of the deep.

Yours, to delve far. But in the trench you made

You fought your last with nature – and so sleep.
